Eat, eat, eat. Here are some of the best cafes and restaurants we’ve been lunching and brunching in Auckland lately.
Fabric Cafe Bistro — Hobsonville
It’s a pleasant 25-minute drive from the city to Catalina Bay, which feels almost like a destination restaurant to me. The Parmesan gnocchi with roasted pumpkin, sage beurre noisette, almonds and goat’s cheese is soft, silky, divine, and delicious. This one makes it into my top 5 gnocchi in Auckland!
Mission by the Beach — Mission Bay
The Ricotta Hotcakes here is one of the best pancakes I’ve had in Auckland. It looks unassuming on the outside and explodes with richness and fluffiness on the inside. For the best views, grab a table by the deck overlooking the beach and Rangitoto Island.
Royal G — The Eatery at Eastridge
Modern Indian street food with a twist. I was a massive fan of now-closed Inti, so I followed the previous owners’ new venture, Royal G—and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s fun, it’s colourful, and it’s a whole lot of spices. The Proper Mango Lassi, sprinkled with cardamom and rose petals, is the prettiest!
Tambura Foods — Smales Farm
For something more traditional, Tambura serves soulful, heartwarming home-cooked South Indian food. Simple, pure, and so good. And those fried potato dumpling-like snacks called Bonda are scrumptious.
Flour Mill Cafe — Epsom
It is the cutest cafe, and the people here are the sweetest. I had the Gypsy Toast—brioche soaked in orange, topped with pistachios, pink grapefruit curd & vanilla mascarpone. It is a luxurious, heavenly plate of breakfast. I’ll be back next time for the Strawberry Shortcake—we came in too early as this one’s only for lunch!
Rosie — Parnell
Rosie is such a classic. I haven’t been in a while, so I was delighted to try their new menu. The Fried eggplant with black sesame, date, and labneh is a sweet, elevated version of baba ganoush. It brings fond memories of the Middle East.
Ozone Coffee Roasters — Grey Lynn
Hip, stylish, and oozing with energy, Ozone was almost full to the brim when we arrived one weekend. And it’s not surprising. This new eatery boasts an impressive space with sleek, modern fit-out and an all-day menu that will leave you spoilt for options.
Next on my list of eateries to visit are Hello Beasty, Cotto, Cazador, and The General.
