An unnamed number rang, it was a quiet afternoon—the lady at the other end of the line offered me an AccorPlus Membership. Do I really need it, I asked myself. Fast forward to a few weeks later, I claimed my complimentary night for a glorious staycation at the nearest Sofitel. Glad I said yes!

I packed my overnight, Uber-ed my way, and arrived for the awaited cushy MySofitel bed. It is really the one of the most comfortable beds one could have an amazing restful sleep. A nice bath in the deep tub (I brought my Coco-Soak Rose with me—it is really amazing) and I’m all sorted for sweet dreams.

The vicinity is in a quiet corner fronting the Waitemata Basin, neighbouring the relatively new ASB Theatre complex. The area is abundant of dining options, but there is no need to step out of the property for a savouring experience. The hotel’s resident restaurant, Lava Dining, offers sumptuous French cuisine inspired dishes paired with an amazing wine list. The three-course dinner was perhaps the highlight of this stay–and that bottle of champagne that was graciously gifted to us. There is a breakfast banquet held in the morning and it’s relaxing to watch the marina during daytime.

The last time I was here, I was invited to preview Jeanswest’s new summer collection showcased in one of the rooms on the 7th floor. I remembered how serene the lobby was, with the big glass walls framing the center water structure that was perfectly lined with flat rocks at the bottom. It exuded luxurious zen. It’s easy to forget there is a Sofitel in Auckland. With its unassuming location, it’s almost secret. That’s quite a difference to the recently opened SO/ Sofitel Auckland in Customs Street.

The hotel is fitted complete with Spa facilities—there’s a gym, indoor heated pool, sauna & steam rooms. I wasn’t able to use these during my stay. But that is on the list—and a treatment too!— because staycations always beg for a repeat. Don’t they?
